Album insights
Mischa Maisky's new double album, "20th Century Classics," takes listeners on a captivating journey through the diverse repertoire of the 20th century. This personal selection is dedicated to his son Mateo. In the first part of the album, Maisky is accompanied on piano by his daughter Lily. Together, they beautifully interpret works such as Shostakovich's Adagio, Bloch's "Prayer," and Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances. Maisky showcases his unique mastery by skillfully highlighting the melodic and rhythmic intricacies of this rich repertoire. The second part features a compelling interpretation with a multitrack recording of Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1, where Maisky played all eight individual cello parts himself. Additionally, listeners can enjoy the debut of Benjamin Yusupov's Cello Concerto, recorded with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under the composer's baton. As the Bayerischer Rundfunk mentioned, "When Mischa Maisky plays the cello, he does so with his entire soul and heart."
