As the presiding genius of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, British jazz-fusion guitarist John McLaughlin has never been afraid to leap genres, and his "Mediterranean" guitar concerto does exactly that: an exuberant, very personal homage to Rodrigo’s Concierto di Aranjuez, openly romantic and scored for all the colours of a full symphony orchestra. In this live performance at the 1989 Munich Klaviersommer Festival McLaughlin himself is the soloist, with Victor Pablo-Perez conducting the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. As a magical bonus, McLaughlin also performs two of his Five Duos with pianist Katia Labèque – a true kindred spirit, on the same creative page.
