Stories don't get much more familiar than Cinderella. In Jules Massenet's sparkling Belle Époque operatic version, Cinders, her awful stepmother and stepsisters, the Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming (now a trouser role for a soprano) are all brought to life with the unmistakeable French accent of Perrault's original fairytale. Fiona Shaw's Glyndebourne production captures the work's glamour and enchantment while updating it to our own time. Heading an international cast, Glyndebourne favourite Danielle de Niese takes the title role with mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey as her royal beau in a fine performance led by critically acclaimed conductor John Wilson, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the pit.
