"We didn't say we were a pop group," says Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer. "We didn't say we were a jazz group. We're a vocal group" – and there's no denying the extraordinary and enduring cross-genre appeal of this New York-based vocal quartet, for which (in the words of founder-member Alan Paul) "excellence exists in all kinds of music". Still, they certainly can swing and when they brought their special brand of jazz fusion to the 1991 Munich Klaviersommer that's precisely what they did. An evening-long celebration of a vocal phenomenon, ranging from lounge jazz to Latin grooves.
