Verdi's Requiem at the Verbier Festival
Gianandrea Noseda
Performance date: 01/08/2013
81 Min
Gianandrea Noseda, a success in both opera and concert halls, is one of the most important Italian conductors of his generation. As for Noseda's compatriots Toscanini, Abbado and Muti, Verdi's Requiem, composed in honour of the poet Allessandro Manzoni and premiered in 1874, is an indispensably central work in his repertoire. At the Verbier Festival in 2013, Noseda leads a dazzling ensemble of soloists, with soprano Maria Agresta at the helm. The Festival's own orchestra and the choir of the Teatro Regio in Turin contributes to an impressive and moving performance of the Mass for the Dead, in which moments of horror are contrasted with lyrical passages of unearthly beauty.
