Boulez Conducts Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, "Resurrection"
Performance date: 26/03/2005
In addition to contemporary works and the classics of musical modernism, the great French conductor Pierre Boulez was always intensively involved with Mahler's symphonies, and few conductors brought to the works so clear a sense of structural cohesion. In 2005, on his 80th birthday – an age belied here by his alert and dynamic direction – Boulez conducted this performance of Mahler's Second Symphony, culminating in an account of the moving final chorus that proved powerfully effective while also eschewing all sentimentality.
