Pianomania! Rudolf Buchbinder: The Diabelli Project

Beethoven's Diabelli Variations have fascinated Rudolf Buchbinder since the beginning of his career as a pianist. It remains one of the composer's most impressive achievements, in which he presented a compelling set of variations showcasing all conceivable playing and compositional techniques – all based on a relatively simple waltz by his colleague Anton Diabelli. For the Beethoven Year 2020, Buchbinder commissioned music from composers to reflect the work from different contemporary perspectives. At the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Buchbinder performs three of these commissioned works by this group – and of course Beethoven's Variations, in addition to further variations on Diabelli's waltz by Schubert and Liszt.
