Anne-Sophie Mutter joins Herbert von Karajan and his Berliner Philharmoniker for the opening concert of the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie – inaugurated on 28 October 1987, nearly a quarter of a century after the main concert hall was opened. A few months shy of his 80th birthday, Karajan directs from the harpsichord in a concert that in many ways also celebrated his five decades at the heart of Berlin's musical life. His former protégée brings characteristic virtuosity and fire to the solo line in Vivaldi's celebrated concertos in performances that mix excitement with traditional, large-scale grandeur.
