A lover, his sweetheart, her jealous guardian and the factotum who'll do whatever it takes to help love win the day. Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia is the perfect opera buffa, and it could have been written for Glyndebourne – the English summer festival that's been making a speciality of Mozart and Rossini for nearly nine decades. Annabel Arden's lively staging brings the visuals up to date, allowing the characters to be their irrepressible selves. With Danielle de Niese as a capricious Rosina, Taylor Stayton as Almaviva and an exuberant Figaro from German baritone Björn Bürger, the result is a delight.
