Some artistic partnerships just seem fated. The Austrian pianist Friedrich Gulda and the Munich-born soprano and percussionist Ursula Anders were partners in life, in art and in spirit – born musical explorers, never more themselves than when pushing each other to the expressive limits. So there's an extraordinary atmosphere about this brief Schubert recital that the pair recorded together in Linz in 1980 – an insight and a conviction that's only heightened by the profundity of Schubert's inspiration. Schubert meet Goethe; Gulda comes together with Anders. The results deserve to be heard on no terms but their own.
