Michael Endres plays Schubert, Godowsky & Gulda

Recorded at the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich in 1993 as part of the Munich Klaviersommer, this recital captures pianist Michael Endres in a programme that offers a glimpse of Vienna across different eras. Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A major, D. 959 forms the first half, its four movements unfolding on a broad scale, from the opening Allegro to the inward Andantino and expansive final Rondo. After the interval, Godowsky’s Symphonic Metamorphoses on themes from Die Fledermaus revisit Johann Strauss with wit and virtuosity, while the inclusion of Friedrich Gulda’s Prelude and Fugue acknowledges his role as founder of the festival.
