Album insights

Pianist Víkingur Ólafsson delves into the interplay of light and shadow in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's music on his upcoming album "Mozart & Contemporaries", set to release on September 3, 2021, under Deutsche Grammophon. In this album, Ólafsson explores his favorite works by Mozart, intertwining them with pieces by Haydn, C.P.E. Bach, Galuppi, and Cimarosa. By centering his repertoire on compositions primarily from the 1780s, he dispels the preconceived notion of Mozart as a heavenly prodigy or idiot savant. According to Ólafsson, this period in Mozart's life and art, especially the decade of the 1780s, captivates him the most. He highlights how during this time, Mozart not only elevated classical tradition to its pinnacle but also subtly subverted it. "The shadows grow darker, the nuances and ambiguities delve deeper," says Ólafsson. A celebrated artist, Víkingur Ólafsson, recipient of prestigious accolades such as Opus Klassik, BBC Music Magazine Award, and Gramophone's "Artist of the Year," is set to launch his fourth album. The CD will feature an exquisite mint packaging, alongside a personal essay by the musician in the booklet.
