Dvořák's Czech re-telling of The Little Mermaid is filled with the atmosphere of the Bohemian countryside: a world of forests, folklore and moonlit pools. So it's ideally suited to Glyndebourne, a summer opera festival deep in the English countryside – which is not to say that the Festival's production values are anything other than world-class. Director Melly Still's 2019 staging of Rusalka has been praised for its sumptuous, fantastic visuals, and its magical interplay of light and shade, mirrored in playing of endless subtlety and warmth from the London Philharmonic conducted by Robin Ticciati. Sally Matthews, in the title role, heads a magnificent cast.
